What Are Hemi-Sync and Monroe Sound Science?
If you've encountered the Gateway Experience, Robert Monroe or The Monroe Institute, you've probably heard the terms Hemi-Sync® and Monroe Sound Science™.
They are related historically, but they are not interchangeable.
Both involve the use of audio as a tool for supporting changes in consciousness, attention or awareness.

What Is Hemi-Sync?
Hemi-Sync grew from the audio techniques developed during Robert Monroe's early exploration of consciousness and altered states.
The technology became closely associated with Monroe Institute programs and the Gateway material.

Today, Hemi-Sync and The Monroe Institute operate independently. Monroe Institute describes Hemi-Sync as a separate company producing content using the original binaural-beat technology developed by Robert Monroe.
Some original Monroe exercises still use Hemi-Sync technology.

What Is Monroe Sound Science?
Monroe Sound Science, or MSS, is the current sound-technology platform developed by The Monroe Institute.

According to Monroe Institute, Monroe Sound Science may combine binaural beats with additional techniques involving frequency, amplitude, phase modulation and other audio methods. The Institute says it currently uses more than 50 techniques in developing audio intended to support targeted states of awareness.

In other words:
Hemi-Sync represents an important part of the original Monroe audio tradition.
Monroe Sound Science represents the Institute's continuing development of audio technology beyond that original system.

What Are You Supposed to Experience?
That depends on the exercise.
Some Monroe audio exercises are designed around relaxation or meditation. Others are used within structured programs exploring specific states of consciousness.
For example, Monroe Institute's Exploring Consciousness program introduces participants to expanded-awareness states including Focus 10 and Focus 12.

The sound itself isn't meant to replace your awareness.
Think of it as a supporting environment for exploration.
You still observe.
You still experience.
You still decide what the experience means to you.

Can I Experience Monroe Audio in Arkansas?
Yes.
The Quantum I in Bentonville, Arkansas hosts official Monroe Institute programs, a Northwest Arkansas Monroe Community Group and additional consciousness experiences facilitated by Monroe Institute Outreach Trainer Holly Vernon.
Depending on the program, experiences may utilize Monroe Sound Science or Hemi-Sync exercises.
